Honda Civic Type R

Case Study

ORBIS Ring-Drive wheels are not only for clean-sheet automotive designs, but can be bolted onto any chassis regardless of size, weight, or vehicle class.

ORBIS retrofitted a front-wheel driving 2017 Honda Civic Type R by replacing the passive rear wheels with ORBIS Ring-Drive wheels. Each ORBIS wheel provided an additional 50 horsepower and 70 lb/ft of torque to each wheel on demand, dramatically improving the 0-60 time.

To complete this prototype, the rear seats were removed to accommodate two Zero Motorcycle AC electric motors and controllers, which turn the rims via a fixed 6.2:1 gear ratio. This equipment adds approximately 180 pounds to the original curb weight of the Civic Type R. Finally, ORBIS billet-machined an aluminum knuckle that bolts to the original suspension mounting points.
